A drunk teenager “lost it” after arguing with his mother – brutally kicking and burning a cat to death.

The man, 19, had downed a bottle of whiskey before attacking the defenceless animal when it scratched him.

He repeatedly kicked its head with steel toe-capped boots, leaving the pet with broken bones and a severed spine, before throwing it on a lit fire. Yet the yob walked free after being given a 12-week suspended prison sentence.

Judge Tim Daber said: “Neither arguments, drinking or scratches are any excuse whatsoever. It shows incredible cruelty.”

But he said the man’s remorse and “record for making positive contributions to the community” had kept him out of prison. Landscape gardener , lived on a farm in Nether Heyford, Northants, owned by the evangelical Jesus Army organisation.

Northampton magistrates heard the cat, which lived on the farm, was probably alive when thrown in the flames last April.

Prosecutor Janita Patel told the court: “This cat suffered extreme pain.”

The manr’s lawyer Hayley Pearson said it was “a moment of madness”, and added he “lost it” after drinking Jack Daniels and rowing with his mum. The man admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. He was told to pay £2,380 costs and banned from owning animals for 10 years.

A statement on Jesus Army’s Facebook page said: “We were shocked and horrified at this behaviour. However, as was said in court, it was totally out of character.”
